Another Google Sitemaps Bug…

Click it to see a bigger picture. (Incase you can’t see it, it reports 3 Not Found (404) errors, but doesn’t have any errors to report…

Google Sitemaps: Last crawl date: Dec 31, 1969

Hmm, seems the domain, london-seo.com has been up for … a while. Back to 1969 infact…

Last crawl date: Dec 31, 1969
Click the picture to see a larger image. A small, and insignificant bug… (and yes, we know about the Unix timestamp. It starts on Jan 1st 1970, so invalid dates are often displayed as Dec 31 1969…). And the reason we’re not in Google index? We are only a few hours old…

Cheapest Domain Registrars

We have conducted the most in depth research we have found on the Internet about prices of registering domain names. Of course, price isn’t everything, so make sure you stick with companies that are well known. We have not listed any companies that actually offer domain names for less than they pay for it, its obvious something isn’t right – be it you have to buy hosting as well, buy more than one year etc. All prices are for one year, unless specified. Any stupidly priced registrars (for example $20 for a .com or more) are not listed either.

Prices include vat, tax etc, and are for those who buy one or two at a time, not in bulk. We may have made a mistake, as they might add on tax in the checkout – we didn’t process any orders here. So let us know of any mistakes. Read more to see the guide… (more…)

CrazyEgg.com – produce heat maps for your website

This is an interesting concept. We havn’t tried it here, but just found it over at StuntDubl and thought it was very interesting. It actually produces “heatmaps” for your site, showing how popular specific links are on your site.

Google Analytics has offered a similar service for a while with its site overlay, but it doesn’t look anywhere as pretty as Crazy Egg’s heatmap (these do use different pages, so don’t compare the actual results…):

Google Analytic (left) vs Crazy Egg (right):

Yahoo integrates Flickr into web search

It has taken Yahoo months to integrate Flickr into their web search. But they have finally done it. It makes sense to do so. The only reason I can see why they waited all this time was for a bit of publicity. Take a look at a sample search. Not all “[keyword] photos” use Flickr results though, many still just show “Image Search Results” (search for “cat photos”).

Maximising adsense profits

There are lots of aspects to maximising adsense profits. This post deals only with the amount of ads you display.

Think about it, if you display 3 blocks of 4 or 5 ads, that is three times the amount of ads than one. The higher paying advertisers (for this example lets say they spend $1 on an ad) will still get shown, but more lower paying advertisers (lets say $0.30) will be shown.

Therefore the chance that a user clicks on a high paying advert is considerably less.

So you might think, ah, i’ll put just one block of adverts. Well, then you’ve got less adverts for them to click on. Its is catch 22 situation.

Our thoughts? Remove any ad blocks that never get any / only get very few clicks, for example an ad block at the very end of a page that has no content at the bottom (say for example if a menu on the side was longer than the content).

It isn’t just Title and Meta keywords anymore!

SEO Basics 101 – part 1

A few years ago if you put the right keywords in the title and meta (keywords and description) tags, you could quite easily get to the top of search engines, especially when mixed in with a few links and repetitions of the keyword in the body text.

But SEO isn’t all so simple any more. Otherwise, people would manipulate search engine results so much that they become useless. In a way, all of SEO is “black hat” – using bad methods to manipulate search engine results rather than just letting them show 100% natural results.
That isn’t to say that the contents of a title tag etc is worthless – no, far from it. But some things, such as the meta description tag is quite outdated now. Not many search engines, certainly not the major ones, take much notice to the meta description, or even keywords, tag. Don’t even ignore these though. Search engines still use the description tag to describe your site in search engine result pages. To be honest, these should be aimed more at actually drawing a user in when they read it than trying to manipulate search engine results with it.

There are many “new” methods that people have only begun to realise helps within the last couple of years. For example, refrencing your sources in an article can often help, especially if they are external sites. However, this relates to the general outgoing links is good rule. Don’t depend just on in-coming links to your site.

The anchor text of links is a very large contributing factor for search engine results. Just take a look at a Google search for failure. That was pretty much 100% done by bloggers just using the anchor text in links to www.whitehouse.gov/president/gwbbio.html.
